The Wood family is flying in from Phoenix, AZ tonight. I can’t wait to see them. I think most of this two week visit will be looking (searching!) for them a house here in Bama. We do have one exciting date planned though, Cody’s trying out for the White Sox on July 9th at Regions Park. Kinda exciting, huh?

New Mouser around town…Help name me!

We have a new mouser that showed up on our front porch this morning. He’s very friendly and seems quite content to lie on the front porch and sleep. He’s been fed (Scout’s food) and given water so he might be here to stay. At least he isn’t a girl cat! Pawpaw did that and now has 11 cats at his barn. I won’t laugh because…..I know that what comes-around, goes-around.

Anyway, this sweet kitty is pretty young. He’s fairly small and is a cream color. Green eyes and for the most part, healthy looking. He just might be someone else’s barn cat but he’s in no hurry to move on. So, just for the fun of it…we’re naming him. My vote is “Scratches” just because Lacie’s friend has a cat named that and I thought it was cute. Other than that, we’ve got nothing! Anyone want to help name our new mouser? We’re taking suggestions.

I thought I’d add a picture of the Scout Puppy too since she was so kind as to not bark and scare off our new friend.

Art Gallery by former students

While at school today, I took a few photos of the art that I have displayed on my wall from former students. I absolutely adore these pieces of student art. A lot of the artists behinds these pieces are all grown up now. I’ve had a lot of these pieces in my classroom for over 10 years. I have had the opportunity to teach a lot of talented children in my career so far. Looking forward to getting to know my future artists.

Again, let me say, refinishing furniture is OF THE DEVIL! The table is still an “in the works” project. Apparently, it takes a week to dry between coats if you are working in a damp, dark basement. Also, I’ve learned that if you paint something wood with an enamel paint……..you will NEVER get all the color out of the wood…..EVER. Here are the pictures. I can’t wait to get it finished and back into my room at school with my computer and my pencil sharpener on it!

Jeff and I are going back to school today to put another two coats of magnetic primer on the two old chalkboards in my room. Total cost for the project will be a whopping $45.00.

The Herb Spiral

Tomorrow’s agenda includes taking Lacie to cheer practice, taking Lacie to a swimming party, hopefully hauling this table back up to the Sycamore School and beginning my herb spiral bed. I’m very excited about getting the herb bed started. I have been wanting to do this for the past four weeks but haven’t had time to get started yet. Hopefully, with Jeff being home, he can help! The herb spiral idea came as a result of researching herb beds on the internet. Jeff is still uncertain that the idea will work but I’m hopeful. A Herb Spiral is a way to use a small space to make a kitchen garden. A spiral of rocks encloses soil in which many kinds of herbs are planted. The rock warms and dehumidifies the soil. The extended edge, wrapped in on itself provides a wide diversity of conditions, creating high productivity in a small space, but is easy to water and harvest. This is an exercise in permaculture. What is permaculture? Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies. Did I know this beforehand? NO….I googled it. For a long time now, I have been wanting to come up with a solution for all the leaves that fall in my backyard every year. When I say there are a lot of leaves in my yard, I don’t simply mean a lot….I mean there are TONS of rotting leaves in my back yard. I’ve been wanting to compost them for some time. This herb spiral is an answer, I hope, to my leaf problem! I intend to use the leaves in my yard as part of the spiral which will serve as my composting “center”. The levels of the herb spiral create different niches with different growing conditions. I am excited about giving it a shot! More to come…..

Busy week coming up!

Tomorrow begins a busy week for us here at the Chappell house. Jeff’s vacation starts tomorrow and thus begins the long laundry-list of things we hoped to accomplish in the yard and in my schoolroom. The table that I intend to use for my teacher’s desk is nearing what I deem to be “complete” and should be ready to go back to school tomorrow. I need to get some pictures of it posted so everyone can see how hard Lacie and I have been working. I, sadly, did not take a “before” picture. I even told Lacie when we were pouring on the first coat of stripper that we should take a picture and we just didn’t get it done. All said, it looks like the project is going to end up having a cost of about $50. Way more than I wanted to spend on the project but when you aren’t sure of what to buy, you end up buying the wrong thing! I can’t believe how many coats of paint I put on that table through the years. We stripped through a coat of bright barn-red paint, a very stubborn coat of industrial-strength Winterboro Bulldog blue paint, and a very sticky sheet of residue leftover from the backing of an old vinyl table cloth.
